How Does Your Garden Grow?
This post was written on May 12th, 2011Have I told you lately how much of a garden nerd I am? I love the dirt on my hands. I enjoy finding worms in the earth. And new green plants sprouting up from the ground get me all giddy. I read about vegetable gardening like some people read about fashion.
I guess you could say it’s in my blood. My mother is also a garden nerd. And her father, my late Grandpa, was a garden nerd. He was the uber garden nerd. And as a little girl I spent the summers watching him tend to his vegetables. And I remember him flipping through the Burpee catalog. Fast forward 20+ years and I’m flipping through the Burpee catalog with such excitement.
We live in a neighborhood that does not allow for large yards. So I work with what I have. Sugar Daddy built this amazing retaining wall so I’d have a fabulous, and beautiful, place to plant my veggies. I helped with what I could; wanting to be a part of it as well. Let me tell you, it was back breaking work! But we loved doing it together and doing it ourselves.
This week I’m loving my soaker hose, fresh compost, and small vegetable plants. I can’t wait to make my own pesto with the basil, or salsa with the tomatoes and peppers.

Nice! Looks like you are taking advantage of the small space you have. I have part of my garden in and it’s starting to sprout. In a couple weeks when our weather gets warmer we will plant the rest.

I wanted to start from seeds for everything but we don’t have a bright sunny spot inside the house to start them. Cucumbers are the only things I’ve had real success starting from seed in the ground.

You are so organized! I would never make the time to get this done even though I always grew up gardening with the family. My grandfather (until the last 4 years) always had a “small” 1 acre garden year round. I guess an acre is small when you live on 400!

My husband doesn’t do any of the gardening, but he helps me prep it every year (which is the hard work). And while I’m on vacation he’ll be watering for me. The fresh veggies are SO worth it!

I just love the beautiful veggie bed! I know exactly how you are feeling because my Grandma was a huge gardener and everything she touched thrived! I just planted a bunch of basil near my tomatoes because I read that they are natural insecticides -the worms don’t like the smell. We shall see. Wishing you bunches of great luck!

I planted marigolds around the edge to help ward off bugs… not sure if the seeds will take off or not. Best of luck on your garden too! Let me know how it does.
