We Do Crazy Things
This post was written on February 14th, 2011Sometimes we do make choices that just don’t make a lot of sense. For instance, getting a third dog when living in a suburb just doesn’t make a lot of sense. It would be one thing if we lived in the country and had a lot of open space for dogs to roam, but we don’t. We now have a Bichon, mini Australian Shepherd, and a Labradoodle… or as Sugar Daddy calls him, a mutt.
Girl loves to spend time with the dogs. In fact, she is pretty much the only reason we still have the Aussie. Girl likes to try and train them, run around with them, take them on walks, etc. But Dallas and Stella don’t appreciate that time with her. They are lazy couch potato dogs (that’s why I like them). They don’t want to be trained, fetch a ball, chase the kids, or play tug of war with a rope. They’d rather lay in the sun and act like cats.
Sugar Daddy decided he wanted to get a dog for Girl. Because 2 dogs just isn’t enough. So, without telling Girl what was going on, we made a trip to the humane society. I was hesitant to support this decision, but I also didn’t want to talk him out of something that he wanted to do special for his daughter. The thing is, I’m the one that is home all day caring for the already 2 dogs and 7 daycare kids. I just couldn’t imagine caring for another thing.
We were at the humane society and saw him. We all stopped in our tracks and stared. I thought to myself “well, crap” because I knew we would be taking him home. But I didn’t say a word. His information sheet said his name was Flash, that he was a 1 year old Labradoodle and loved children and playing fetch. He lived in a house with 2 children, and when the mom got pregnant again apparently she developed an allergy against the dog. The paper work was filled out and it was time to meet flash in the “get to know you” room. I didn’t want to be a part of it, so I chose to wait outside the room. But I ended up in the room somehow. And I ended up loving the damn dog.
Long story short, Girl loved him too. And so did Sugar Daddy and Teen. Tween was with a friend and had NO idea he would be coming home to a new family member. Teen loved Flash so much he was biting his fingernails off stressed that someone else would come and swipe him up. While we were getting to know Flash there were several people lined up outside our room waiting to meet him… he was a popular fellow. And now he is ours.
Three dogs. It’s crazy and makes no sense. Flash is off riding in the car with Sugar Daddy as I type this. He is signed up for obedience school because he is FULL of energy and has a hard time staying focused. A dog with A.D.D… I can totally relate! He has done well albeit his moment of incessant barking at the neighbor dogs.
Dear Flash, Hopefully you make it at our home…. I’m not convinced this was a good idea so you have a LOT to prove.
