Share Your Gifts: Week Three

This post was written on February 9th, 2011

For several years my mother was a single mother raising three children. She worked full time so I spent a lot of time at my Grandma & Grandpa’s house in the country. They had a simple 3-bedroom house that was surrounded with woods. A creek ran through their land and to get to the house one had to cross a bridge. I have so many memories of staying at their house. So many memories of my Grandma and Grandpa.

My Grandpa passed away when I was in my early teens, but my Grandma is still alive and vibrant. Her eyesight is failing her, but that doesn’t keep her from watching college football (a favorite past time of hers) and staying up to date on the newest books (she listens to them instead of reading). She now has a very awesome piece of equipment that allows her to continue reading the letters that I send and see the pictures from family. It’s a reading machine. Attached to it is a large super magnifier that enlarges document she wants to see. This has been such a blessing to her as she can now read the letters herself instead of having someone else read them to her.

My gift share this week is a 3-page letter (typed in easy to read size 14 font) and updated pictures of my kids for my Grandma. I only get to see her about once a year… something I never thought as a child could be possible. How does one only see their grandparents once a year?! Unspeakable! But there is a 7 hour drive that separates us, so I try to mail letters & pictures often.

Did you use your gifts/talents this past week to help someone else or bring a smile to their face? If so, I’d love to hear about it here! Feel free to use the button on the left sidebar for your blog post.

So sweet, Laura! Just a few weeks ago my oldest wrote my grandma a letter, addressed and stamped it herself – in the wrong place :) and we walked it to the mailbox. And it made it! I should have taken pics to blog it. Love this idea! And I’m sure your grandma treasured that letter very much!

My daughter did the same… wrote letters to family (using the personalized stationary she got for Christmas) and addressed the envelopes herself, but put a lot of the info in the wrong spots. Ooops! My Grandma does love getting letters.

There is nothing more awesome than getting a hand written letter. So sorry that you all live so far from each other :( I bet she appreciates what you do very much!
