Older Kids Love Valentine’s Day Too

This post was written on February 6th, 2011

Sugar Daddy and I have never exchanged anything on Valentine’s Day. Wait, I take that back. Before we were married, when he was trying to whoo me over, he mailed me a Valentine’s day card. And the first year we were married he got me a little gift; it was sweet & thoughtful. But I quickly learned that Sugar Daddy is not a Valentine day kind of guy. So I’ve made it a special day for the kids because I like to make a big deal out of “hallmark” holidays.

In the past I have given coupons for special treats; free sleepover, trip to the movie theater, pizza toppings of your choice, dessert of your choice, trip to Dairy Queen, You pick the snack at store, etc. Those were always a hit.

This year I’m doing things differently, because, well, quite honestly… we have a lot of “things”. So instead of giving the kids something, Sugar Daddy and I will be taking them to DO something special. Girl will get treated to McDonald’s for a one on one date with her dad. That will mean SO much to her, more than any Webkinz or box of candy. Tween & Teen will get a one on one trip to a place of their choice as well…. with me or Sugar Daddy. They will probably pick Sugar Daddy. The key here is MAKING IT HAPPEN. It’s one thing to SAY we will take them somewhere. At this age, one on one time is crucial. It’s life line for the family.

Valentine’s Day is on a Monday, so the kids will get pancakes with Valentine sprinkles and pink milk. I still do that for them, and I probably will even when they have children of their own because I enjoy it. Tween & Girl have class parties and it’s my turn to provide the treat for Tween’s class. I’ll be making the popcorn treat pictured below. Click on the picture to get the recipe. Girl is still young enough to make Valentines for her class, and we will be making the “Love Juice” pictured below with a few changes. Girl will draw a picture that I will make copies of to cut and glue on the water bottle. That way the bottles are personalized by her. Teen will not have class parties or make Valentines (obviously). But he’ll get the one on one time and special breakfast. Because I believe that you are NEVER too old to enjoy a “hallmark” holiday.

My mom used to always make the day special for us by tucking sweete into our lunch bags. When we got home she would have crafts and goodies for us. I think it’s all about creating a memory ;)

I saw the water bottles and thought they were SUCH a sweet idea. Plus, they can either add the flavor (I would probably do kool-aid packets though) or drink it as is.

Girl and I made them on Saturday and they were a bit more work than I envisioned (which is usually always how it is), but we did it together and had a really good time. I like that the version we made have personalized labels around the bottle. Thanks for visiting!
