Camping Might Not Be His Thing

This post was written on December 8th, 2010

Teen is very random. He has this amazing sense of humor; very dry. He’ll say things out of nowhere &  it’s funny.

He and I were at Wal-Mart together, which is very rare. We both detest Wal-Mart, but luckily for him, he doesn’t have to go. This time he chose to go with me. If you are a mother of a a teen boy you know how shocking that was for me. And also how happy it made me. I love his company when we are one on one.

We were at the check out and Teen, grabbing a lint roller, said to me, “Mom, I need one of these for the next time I go camping.”

First of all, I didn’t realize he planned on going camping anytime soon. Secondly, why a lint roller of all things?

So I asked him, “Um, okay son, but why a lint roller?’

He responded, in a very serious tone, “To use when I start my campfire.”

And at this very moment I let out a huge cackling laugh. One that makes people stare. I almost peed my pants.

Teen looked at me with confusion.

“Son, do you mean flint? That is what you need to start a fire, not lint.”

And I explained to him what a lint roller is used for.

“Oh, then I’ll need one of these to remove bear hair, in case I get close to one.”

“Son, you will need a lot more than a lint roller if you come into close contact with a bear.”

“True.”

The end.

Oh, and the lady in line in front of us looked at Teen like he was stupid. Which cracked me up, because he is by no means stupid. Lacking basic camping skills maybe. But definitely not stupid. And a part of me thinks he might have been joking with me. But if he was he never let on… I can’t ever tell with his sense of humor.
