But She is My Baby!

This post was written on December 7th, 2010

She is my youngest. The last child I will ever have. My only daughter. My baby.

We just celebrated her 8th birthday and my heart is breaking. I’m so incredibly proud of her… as all mothers understand. So my heart breaks for the time gone by. My heart breaks for the time I will not get back.

She is creative & independent. She is a good friend, a caring daughter, a sweet sister, and a Daddy’s girl. She is sometimes outspoken and very honest (causing some embarrassment for her mother). She is a social butterfly, an artist, a fashionista, and a competitive athlete. She loves music & books. She loves life.

And I love her.

I love her so much sometimes I worry it’s too much. Is that possible?

She is almost 8. I knew it would happen. I knew when I gave birth to her that the time would come when she would be too old. She would make her own decisions, choose her own friends, and pick out her own clothes (causing a bit of embarrassment for her mother). I knew the time would come when I couldn’t rock her to sleep.

But the time has also come for us to have really special Mother/Daughter moments.

I’m holding on to that.

She had a fun party this weekend with 9 of her friends; Hawaiian style. They made flip flop sun catchers, flip flop charm bracelets, did the limbo, and ate flip flop cake. She giggled the entire time, so happy to be surrounded by good friends (and presents). And I watched her. She didn’t need me. So I took a lot of pictures and watched my sweet baby girl have a blast celebrating the only 8th birthday she’ll ever have.

And the cake, it was great fun to make. My dearest friend was in town with her family, and together we had fun with fondant and frosting. We designed the cake to match the tablecloth. I didn’t get a picture of the inside, but it was layered with bright pink and yellow cake. Bright pink candles topped the cake. The cake was yummy… I had the leftovers for breakfast Sunday morning with my coffee.
