On the 2nd Day of Christmas: Laundry Advice {yawn}

This post was written on December 2nd, 2010

While your children are young, begin showing them the basics of doing laundry. Believe me, you will thank yourself when they are older and doing their own laundry without discoloring or shrinking everything. My best friend and her family are coming to visit this weekend and while I’m trying to get the house in order, I know that I have 2 children that can wash their own bedding and clothes. Thank goodness for that! I have plenty of other things that need my attention; why waste it on something they are fully capable of doing? They produced the dirty clothes after all.

When they are little, help them sort. Explain to them whites, darks, etc. I taught my kids that under garments, socks, towels,  & bedding need to be sanitized, so they go on the hot/cold setting. Everyday clothes and darks can wash on cold. To be on the safe side, Teen & Tween wash everything of theirs on cold so that the colors won’t bleed.

They also know that if they don’t do their own laundry they will have nothing clean to wear. That might be something an 8 year old doesn’t care about, but believe me, when they are 13 they care. Smelling good is VERY important.

My timer is set, so in 35 minutes I’ll be reminded to make my journey to the laundry room, unload, re-load, and do it all over again a few more times. It’s boring and monotonous, but unless your family is of some religion where stench rules supreme, it has to be done.

Happy cleaning! And Merry 2nd day of Christmas!

    I’m not a one load every day kind of gal… I’m a wait until it’s a huge mound and then I wash 5 loads in one day. Then it takes me another few days to get it all put away.

    great advice….now that m is 11 she makes sure she’s all primp in the morning….and of course it’s my fault if she goes out the door disorganised…your old enough to take care of yourself….i hate when they ask me to get their bowl of cereal when i’m trying to make my coffee, do the clothes for the morning…no get it yourself….:)

    i’m glad your kids smell good! happy holidays:)
