Being All of Your{self}

This post was written on October 11th, 2010

Wife, Mother, Daycare Provider, Cook, Cleaning Lady, Taxi Service….

It can all be draining. It can be suffocating. You could very well get lost.

As busy women, we sometimes forget all of our self. We hear the whisper, sometimes it’s more like a scream. Begging to find yourself again. It’s different for all of us.

For me it’s the need to do something outside of the day to day. Being all of me requires stepping out. Stepping away from the mom & wife duties. Because aren’t we all better mothers and wives when we are full? The answer is a deafening “yes!”. So what is it that keeps you from being all of you? Is it fear? Laziness? Confusion? Lack of time? Does the thought of trying to find yourself again feel overwhelming?

Let me fill you in on something I’m learning the hard way;

Unless you make time for YOU, you will lose yourself. And the more lost you become the harder it is to find your way back.

Wouldn’t it feel good to be at your best? Teen said to me the other day “Mom, have you always been so boring?”. I told him that paying bills, doing dishes, helping with homework, and keeping the house from falling apart  makes me a boring person,  before all of that I was pretty damn cool. But is that an excuse? Because not all mothers & wives lose themselves.

So, tell me, have you ever been lost? Do you feel you are being ALL of your self? What do you enjoy doing for you and how do you make it happen? What kind of legacy are you leaving for your children? Will they remember you as tired and burned out or fun and creative? And then I challenge you to make a list of things that you have been putting off. Things that you always said you’d do “someday”. It can be anything, as long as it makes you feel you. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else.

    Great post! I am trying to do better at this myself~ I finally declared that I wouldn’t do any ‘chores’ during nap time… i just take that time for me, whether it’s reading or sewing or anything else that is fulfilling. I am such a better wife and mom when I feel like I can breathe a bit! Over from Bloggy Moms~ you have a great place! =)

    Good for you! It’s sticking with it that’s the hard part, especially when having little ones in the house. Glad you stopped by to visit.

    For awhile I lost myself. Like most mothers, I got caught up in the day to day. Turning 40 made me see things differently. I realized how important it is to be a person as well as a mom. It is important not only for you, but for those around you. As you know, when mom is happy, everyone is happy. :)

    Love the picture and of course love what you are writing about it! Immersed in baby-land over the last few years I totally lost myself! Now, I’m working hard to change that for myself and for my family. You only get one chance at it!
