Dreaming of a 7 Eleven Birthday

This post was written on January 6th, 2010

Remember that OCD I was telling you about before?  Yeah, well, here is another example.

Seven years ago when I was pregnant with Girl, I dreamt of a day that she would turn 7 and Tween would turn 11. “Aha” I thought, “I can plan a 7 Eleven themed birthday party!”.  It was just a passing moment. Something I briefly thought of. I dreamt of serving Slurpees and convenience store themed food (like ho hos, little bags of chips, hot dogs, etc).

Fast forward to this past December when their 7th and 11th birthdays arrived. They agreed to have a party themed in green and orange even though Girl had no idea what the 7 Eleven store was. She was just happy that the “7″ on the cake would be in orange and not green. And so the planning began. I went to the 7 Eleven website to get an idea of the logo. I drew in my sketch pad how I could make the cake and the supplies that I would need.

I decided on a delicious pound cake based cake from Pioneer Woman and the cream cheese frosting for the top.

Birthday day arrived. I went to the party supply store for plenty of orange and green balloons to add to the theme. Plates, forks, napkins, and even wrapping paper were in the 7 Eleven inspired colors.

The element I was most excited about was the cake. I had used this recipe before (but I wouldn’t be adding the berries this time) and it was delicious. Last minute I ran to the store to get more butter and cream cheese just in case we needed more frosting. And I knew the rule of this frosting. Those two ingredients MUST be at room temperature to mix well. Because I felt hurried (I always feel hurried) I didn’t completely allow them to reach room temp.

And I paid for that mistake.

The frosting looked curdled.

As you’ll see in the picture there are white chunks throughout the cake.

And my OCD kicked in.

Before the party there I stood over the cake with toothpicks trying to pick out the larger chunks of cream cheese. I couldn’t bear for this cake to be seen by family and friends. It just couldn’t happen. But it did.

This is the cake that everyone saw. And ate. And it was delicious with it’s white lumps.

Pretty close to the real thing, right?

We are thinking of doing the same for our daughter & son who are turning 7 & 11 this February…so we have been looking for ideas. Thanks!! Were you able to buy any products from anywhere ? I saw some t-shirts on ebay :)

I didn’t find any items, but I did consider buying the slurpee cups since they originated at the 7/11 gas station. We used orange and green plates, and everything else, including wrapping paper, in those colors. Have fun!
