SM's Faves 12-3-2009 "Children's Gifts"

This post was written on December 4th, 2009

Because two of my children have birthdays around the holidays I have to be very organized with my gift list. So I am usually done with my Christmas shopping by the end of November. There are a few stragglers from time to time that I have to seek out last minute, but otherwise, the presents are purchased AND wrapped by December 1st.

For those of you that do not have to be super organized and have the luxury of buying gifts up until December 24th, this list of Faves may come of some help to you. I have made note of the items that I could give a personal review.

I realize that everyone has heard of American Girl dolls. But having a daughter that has really bonded with hers I can’t recommend these enough. The books are great; teaching such lessons as patience, bravery, friendship, and kindness. The dolls are pricey, but they have been worth every penny in this house. My daughter has the doll shown below, Molly. And she is receiving this one as a gift this year. ( I do NOT recommend these dolls to children who have not shown a responsibilty of taking care of toys)

For the little kiddos that I have purchased gifts for in the past these Nix socks are great! They have been given rave reviews from the parents. They are fun AND functional and come in several different colors.

It’s always more difficult to find the right gift for your tween/teen.  Skullcandy headphones are great and come in many different funky and hip color combos.  Teen has a pair and claims they are very comfy.

The Wee Knit finger puppets are a personal favorite to give to any youngster. I have purchased 5 different sets as the creator of them makes just about every theme imaginable. Some of her sets even come with a book that go together. Etsy is awesome! I heart Etsy.

This boardgame is enjoyed by all three of my kids. Teen and Sugar Daddy played it for hours during our summer vacation this year and so I found this set at Target to give as a gift so they can continue to play it at home. It’s all about strategy.

And lastly, I can not stress enough how much I love to give books as gifts. You never know when your book will become a childhood memory for a child. Or how it will be an inspiration for an adult. Someone on your list that is impossible to buy for? Find out what their favorite hobby is and get them a book on it!  These are two of my children’s favorites:

Teen doesn't read much, but he has read this one twice.

Madonna created a spin off series of books from her children's book "The English Roses"

I can personally attest to the re-read value of the Giver. I read it back when I was in elementary school and it just really spoke to me. It deals with a couple serious issues that I think younger teens and on can try to wrap their heads around. This is actual the start of a loose trilogy by Lois Lowry. The second is “Finding Blue” and the final installment is “Messenger”. Each of these can stand alone but for a beginner reader this might be a good way to introduce them to other good book series.
