OCD and Christmas Lights

This post was written on December 1st, 2009

I have never been officially diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but only because I refuse to pay someone to tell me what I already know. It’s nothing that requires medication or padded walls. (Well, maybe medication would be helpful. Actually, the padded walls might be nice too)

Sugar Daddy decided he wanted to put lights on the house this Christmas since we have family visiting. He asked me to be in charge of picking out the lights.

Big Mistake. And he should have known better.

Most people would have just visited the local hardware store, picked out some outdoor lights and gone on with their lives. But not me.

I had to plan it out; consider the color palette, how it would flow with the neighbors’ houses, etc. After leaving the hardware store and not finding anything I was completely happy with, I came home to find help on the internet. Not help with my OCD…. help with Christmas lights.

Six hours later I was stressed and had a headache. Not only was I more confused than before, but I was beginning to think the whole Christmas lights thing was a joke. There are faceted lights, blinking lights, wave lights that slowly change colors, rope lights, icicle lights… and not to mention all of the colors!

Sugar Daddy told me to just pick a damn color. (Girl hopefully won’t repeat that again. I can hear her at school now “Just hand me a damn crayon, I don’t care what color!”)

I couldn’t pick a style, let alone a color. So I had the kids each write down two colors they would like on the house. Blue was a common color between them all. But I really wanted red. And we can’t have red with blue because then we would just look like the lazy neighbors that left up their 4th of July decorations.

So we are going with blue and gold as our color scheme. And now I can breathe.

But they aren’t on the house yet. And what they look like on the house is an entirely different matter for someone with OCD.
